Hi friends,What is the best container you have used for a letterbox? I can't find anything that seems watertight. We found a few local boxes that were soaked, and they used smallish "Ziploc" containers, 1-cup squares. My daughters have carved their stamps for our boxes to be planted! We made small log books out of cut paper, a hole punch, and brass paper fasteners. We can't wait. :-)Becky and Co.

If you can't find authentic Lock & Locks (not the dollar store kind, get the real stuff), then I would recommend Kraft peanut butter jars. Take out the paper gasket from the inside of the lid and put in a thin fun foam gasket.Use the paper gasket as a template to cut the fun foam. That way the seal on the jar should be water tight. This is especially important for ground hides. You need a good seal between the lid and the jar. I wash the Kraft peanut butter jar well. Never had problems with animals causing damage. Never had an issue with peanut allergy letterboxers but I don't know of any in my area. You could always mention that it's a pb jar in your clues. But ideally, go with the authentic Lock & Lock. You will see a Lock & Lock logo on the lid.

In Ontario, Canada most letterboxers use lock n lock boxes. They are a little more pricey but they seem to last in all conditions here. http://shop.locknlock-usa.com/ They are usually available at WalMart and other department stores. Dollar stores have boxes that look similar but they don’t tend to last long. Hope this helps.See yaPamSent: Sunday, March 15, 2015 9:17 AMSubject: Re: [LbNA] The rookies ask: Best container for outdoor letterbox?

For smaller boxes I have been using pill containers, preferably the ones of uniform size where the neck is not smaller than the body. Peel the label off, paint with Krylon Fusion green or brown spray paint and you are ready to go.

I've seen lots of military grade ammo boxes with everything in separate Ziploc style bags. Some are wet, some are dry. We do Love the lock n lock containers too. I saw an old travel coffee mug once too.

Hello!
There is nothing so water-tight as an ammo can. The problem is, they are large, heavy, not conducive to some places, and have gotten rather expensive, now that military surplus places know that boxers, cachers, et al like them. But for trail hides in the forest, or anywhere in the desert, they are better than anything else, because they will not decay over time and nothing can chew into them.
The use of *ANY* plastic container, no matter how thick, will almost-certainly require replacement after a few years, particularly in areas of extreme heat or cold: plastic will eventually get brittle and crack.
